Austin, TX Attraction – Texas State Capitol Building

The Texas Capitol building, located at 1100 Congress Ave., Austin, Texas 79701, is recognized as one of America’s most distinguished state capitol buildings, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. In fact, it is one of only a few capitol buildings that is taller than the United State Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
The building itself houses the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and the Governor of Texas, and has significant spaces that include the House of Representatives Chamber, the Senate Chamber, the Texas Supreme Courtroom, and the Legislative Reference Library. There are even spaces that are hidden and not available to the public including the Blue Occuli, the Dome Walkways, and Subterranean Vault.
There are guided walking tours of the Capitol throughout the week, as well as on weekends, and there are additional self-guided tours of the Capitol and grounds with tour brochures available for those who want to learn more about the history and importance of the building.
