Austin, TX Attraction – Mount Bonnell

Client Centered

Located in Covert Park, Mount Bonnell is one of the highest points inside Austin’s city limits at 781 feet, making it one of the best places in the area to see some of the beautiful views Austin has to offer. The area has a recorded history dating back to the 1850s, but the now 5.1-acre park was part of a donation made by Frank Covert in 1939. Mount Bonnell has been a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1969 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2015.

The area has some impressive views of Downtown Austin and the 360 Bridge, and the hike to the peak is less of a workout and more of a tourist-friendly destination. With a viewing deck and pavilion at the top, you can rest and take in the views before making your way back down the 102-stair walkway. Being one of the most visited sites in Austin, Mount Bonnell is a popular sightseeing destination and has been since the 19th century, attracting locals and tourists alike.

While the trail is free to use and is great for all ages, it is not paved and some of the steps are uneven making the path inaccessible for some people. The trail is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, so bring your out-of-town guests, kids, dogs, or take a hike by yourself to enjoy the scenic views of the Lake Austin portion of the Colorado River, the ever-growing skyline of Downtown Austin, and the Texas Hill Country. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and your camera! You won’t want to forget these views!
