Strategy Session: Tips for the Upcoming Tax Season

September 09, 2025

Hello everyone! This is Roger Brooks at Strategic Investment Management.

As we kick off 2025, it’s time to start preparing for the upcoming tax season. In this video, we’ll share five tips to help you tackle this tax season with confidence.

1. Organize Your Documents Early This first tip is simple but critical: get organized early. Gather all your necessary documents, such as W-2s, 1099s, receipts for deductions, and investment statements. Make a checklist to ensure nothing gets overlooked.

2. Take Advantage of Tax Credits and Deductions Look into potential tax credits and deductions that you may qualify for. For instance, if you’ve contributed to an IRA or 401(k), you could lower your taxable income. Families may qualify for child tax credits, while homeowners might benefit from mortgage interest deductions. If you aren’t sure what applies to you, we recommend meeting with a tax professional.

3. Stay Updated on Tax Law Changes Tax laws often change from year to year. Research any changes or work with a tax advisor to ensure your return reflects the latest rules. Ignoring new regulations could cost you valuable savings or lead to filing errors.

4. Don’t Forget About Estimated Taxes If you’re self-employed, a freelancer, or earn income that isn’t subject to withholding, set reminders to pay your quarterly estimated taxes. Missing these payments can result in penalties, so mark those deadlines on your calendar! For 2025, the due dates are in April, June, September, and January of next year.

5. File Early Don’t wait until the last minute to file. Filing early helps reduce stress and minimize the risk of processing delays. Early filing can also help protect you from tax-related identity theft. Scammers can’t file under your name if you’ve already submitted your return.

And there you have it — five tips to help you navigate the upcoming tax season with confidence! By following these tips, you’ll be in great shape to handle your taxes this year.
