Strategy Session: Rethinking Life Insurance As You Near Retirement

May 29, 2026

Hello, this is Roger Brooks at Strategic Investment Management.

In today’s Strategy Session, I want to discuss how the purpose of your life insurance may change as you approach retirement.

Early in life, insurance is mostly about protecting income and family stability.

But near retirement, it becomes about preserving wealth, creating tax-efficient liquidity, and supporting your family. You also want to look at charitable giving, estate settlement, or any other goals you may have.

Think of your policy as a strategic asset, not just a product. Insurance can create flexibility, helping you avoid selling investments in a down market, replace lost pension income, or provide funds for your heirs exactly when they’re needed most.

Different policies play different roles.

Whole life and guaranteed universal life can provide lifetime coverage and predictable protection.

Survivorship policies can help families handle estate taxes or fund a legacy gift.

And then you have those hybrid policies. Those hybrid policies can support long-term care planning without draining retirement savings

The key is alignment. Your coverage should match your current goals, not the ones you had 20 years ago.

If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your insurance policies, now is a great time to see whether they still fit your current goals and stage of life you’re in.
